You are warm welcome to the web site "Control and Application". The web site is to provide with information on the area of automatic control and control applications in daily life and industries.

Overview of Control and Application

Automatic control systems have been improved according to human beings increasing knowledge and demands and with time. The first man-made automatic control systems were simple mechanical ones like the ancient water clock of Ktesibios in Alexandria Egypt around the third century B.C or the flyball speed governor invented by James Watt by the end of the 18th century. Demand of automatic control systems is increasing. Automatic control systems have rapidly been developed since there were new inventions in electric and electronic engineering, semiconductor technology, and computer science in the later half of the 20th century.

There are many kinds of automatic control systems according to classification methods. Based on operational principles and energy conversion, they can be divided into mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and electric and electronic systems, and combination of those systems. The most commonly used systems at present are electric and electronic systems. Electric and electronic systems can be categorised into analogue control systems and digital control systems, or in other words, computer-based control system. The trend of control systems shows that more and more computer-based control systems are designed.

Modern control theories, information technology (including hardware, software technique, network technique, interface technique and wireless technique), semiconductor technology and programmable system on a chip technique are opening new directions of designing automatic control systems used in industries and daily life. The availability of GNSSs (Global Navigation Satellite Systems including GPS, GLONASS and GALIELO) and telecommunication satellites stimulates more and more practical applications in development of automatic control systems with high accuracy, which can be used in various areas.

Human beings always want to explore and conquer the nature, surrounding world and space for many purposes. To explore remote areas, deep seabeds and huge space becomes difficult and dangerous. To reach such areas human beings need to use machines and equipment. Automatic control systems are really helpful for conquering the nature and the world. They help human beings to release burdens, to improve accuracy, precision and productivity and enhance safety.

In our daily life automatic control systems are helpful for human beings. In developed countries like America, Japan, Australia and European countries there are a lot of automatic control systems for daily life such as automatic doors, automatically flushing system in toilets, automatic vendors, train ticket vending machine and automatic ticket checkers at stations and automatic irrigation systems in farms. In industries there are automatic assembly lines in chemical and motoring companies. Just think of Vietnam. Vietnam is developing from a backward agricultural country. Until it can become an industrialised and developed country, it needs a variety of automatic control systems used in many areas in order to improve productivity, increase wealths and materials and enhance quality of goods and services. Automatic control systems exist in various forms, from a simple system like an oscillating mechanism for a table fan to a very complicated system like control systems on airplanes, underwater vehicles or in space crafts.

Vietnam is an agricultural country whose about 70 % of the population are farmers with a long history. However, the agriculture is still backward with low productivity and low quality agricultural products, and improperly preserved products and food safety standards seem not to exist. Vietnamese farmers have to use human forces and animals for hard work. They do not have machines. On the way to develop the country we should take advantages of our long-history agriculture and improve it much more to increase more agricultural products. We can export high quality agricultural products with high safety standards to foreign countries for exchange of industrial machines and goods that we cannot produce, such as refined gasolines and industrial precise machinery. To improve productivity and enhance quality we need to industrialise our agriculture. Automatic control systems will play an important role to help undertake the country’s industrialisation and modernisation.

Purposes of Web Site

Obviously, automatic control systems help with not only successful industrialisation of the agriculture but also development in various areas. The automatic control systems will bring up a lot of benefits for national economy. We, a group of lecturers, researchers and students working in the area of automatic control, have established this web site for the following purposes:

• To build data base including online lectures and learning resources related to control engineering;
• To establish a network of collaborators in the area of automatic control and a forum for mastering knowledge, exchange of ideas and information, collaboration in research and application of control theories in producing automatic control systems for community;
• To extend activities in quality teaching and learning and research in the area of automatic control, especially among students, lectures at universities in Vietnam and overseas;
• To contribute to human resource education and training in the area of automatic control.

Finally, we hope that you will be enjoying our information in control engineering and find it useful. We look forward to receiving support and collaboration from those who are very interested in our web site and the area of automatic control engineering.
